“The people I distrust most are those who want to improve our lives but have only one course of action.”
― Frank Herbert
Writing is like any task that can be picked up and over time you fall into a pattern of writing and you develop a special niche. Niches are good; for some writers they can be absolutely great, but for a percentage of aspiring artists it can be a crutch or a dark hole you need to free yourself.
Just because you have always written a certain way doesn’t mean you have to continue to write that way. If you think your writing is dry or going no where then its time to take a different approach.
Think of your favorite way to tell a story. Get a good sense of an idea you want to share. Write an opening paragraph in a way that makes you happy. Now write that paragraph in a perspective that you would never ordinarily write and see if it brings out anything fresh or new.
At the very least you will learn something about yourself, even if its that you absolutely don’t want to change how you write.
