‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.’ – Margaret Mead –
I often stop writing because I have a horrible thought – if I write this will people think I am a serious writer?
So, what is a serious writer? I think the better question is to find out what you want to get out of writing. I enjoy reading a lot of sci-fi fantasy as well as dystopian themed stories; yet, every time I sit down to write I spend hours pondering how to write some great feat of literary accomplishment.
I am beginning to think that this makes no sense. Why am I struggling so hard to try and produce some literary genius? The books that are dubbed ‘trash’ books from ‘bad’ authors are still producing thousands to millions of dollars of revenue from their books. As much as you want to bash the young adult novel genre or the bad writers that seem to get so many books published is not so much a reflection on them as it is a reflection on what you expect from yourself.
If you like reading ‘trash’ novels then try writing one of your own. A secret to writing is that a reader will only enjoy reading your work if you enjoy writing it. If its fun to write then you are doing what you should be doing. Stop bashing your head against the wall and just let your passion fill you with enjoyment, not frustration.
Write something just for yourself that is fun. Maybe its crazy, maybe thats what the world needs next.
